Floor Protection Covering, Plastic Sheeting or Cardboard: Which Is Better?

Floor protection materials do not do the same job. Covering, plastic sheeting and cardboard differ in grip, impact and reuse.

Floor protection materials look similar on the shelf: a sheet, a roll, a wrap. The difference shows up on the job. Plastic slips, cardboard falls apart, and a covering stays put while it cushions impact. Which one is the better choice depends on how long the work lasts and how valuable the floor is.

## Plastic sheeting

Plastic is cheap and quick to lay. It turns away paint splash for a short time. Underfoot it bunches, tears and leaves the floor bare. On stairs and busy routes the slip adds risk. It is often single-use.

## Cardboard

Cardboard takes only limited impact and softens when it gets wet. Paint and dust work into it, and it can leave fibres. It shifts in a draught and under traffic. It is usually thrown away. It can be considered for a short, dry move. It is weak for a renovation that runs for days.

## Floor protection covering

A self-adhesive felt covering stays on the line where it was laid. The felt softens tools and rubbing. Edges are easy to check. If its condition allows and the instructions permit, it can be used again. Its cost is usually a more predictable line than repairing parquet or marble that was left open.

On a short, dry, low-risk job a thin layer may be enough. Where the surface is valuable and paint and traffic continue for days, the covering is the stronger choice. The decision is still checked against the surface, the duration and the product instructions.
